NIGHT VISION MONOCULAR – Yukon Advanced Optics

Following on from the Yukon 2 x 24 and the Yukon 3 x 42 we now have the Yukon Advanced Optics 4 x 50 Night Vision Monocular – the most recent Yukon Monocular available to us. It appears to be a winner right from the word “go”. The features and applications of this excellent instrument are discussed here.

Design:
This palm-sized monocular is ruggedly constructed, in a durable, compact, lightweight, water-resistant composite housing in rubber armor. Its ergonomically-friendly body is rubber-armored and comes with a padded corduroy carrying case, carrying strap and innovative lens cover.

Improved viewing at night is made possible by the impressive 4x magnification and by maximum light utilization. This is enabled not only by the wider objective lens of 50mm (for maximum light intake), but also by improved wavelength/contrast characteristics of the lens and improved optics of the Generation 1 amplification tube. The 36 /p/mm. resolution of the image tube is excellent for a Generation 1 night instruments for viewing in the dark, as well as the 15 degree angle of view.

These features ensure quality viewing without the aid of artificial light – a claim confirmed by several satisfied users.

However, this product does come with an advanced infrared illuminator. The infrared lighting system is claimed to be exclusive to Yukon and is designed to deliver the maximum possible infrared output. This is made possible by a special feature of the infrared system: The exclusive PULS System Infrared (IR) Illuminator, by means of which the illuminator diode delivers infrared light by pulses.

This pulsing has four benefits:

a. The pulsing enables the illuminator to penetrate deeper into the night (longer distances, up to 250 meters) due to quick energy bursts.
b. The pulsing protects the illuminator diode from burning out.
c. The pulsing is not visible to the human eye.
d. It prolongs the battery life used to drive the electronics of the system.

According to customer reviews switching on the infrared illuminator is like switching on flush lights. Obviously, metaphorically speaking.

The night vision monocular under discussion is marketed as a multifunctional/multitask night vision device, which it indeed is. It can be used as any of the following applications:

a. a hand held monocular
b. mountable on a tripod
c. a riflescope. It can even be coupled with an exclusive rifle mount/laser system that brings it right to the top of the newest generation of compact night vision riflescopes.
d. a head mountable view
e. a digital camera attachment
f. a video component.

It’s versatility is confirmed by the wide range of applications, ranging from game spotting, trekking, nature viewing, search and rescue, surveillance or hunting. Indeed, as versatile as this type of instrument comes!

Finally, with a warranty of 3 years, the manufacturer is expressing their confidence in the quality of Yukon Advanced Optics 4×50 Night Vision Monocular in no uncertain terms.
